A Penny Saved

On October 16th I found out that my six year old bulldog, Penny, has cancer.  On October 23rd we took a road trip to a specialist for as much information as we could afford. Given the the location and nature of the excised tumors an abdominal ultrasound was the scariest test on the menu, so that's what we ordered. The image was normal and with that information we avoided an immediate death sentence.   Just like that, we had a chance, it was fully on.  We're gathering resources to fund  a well equipped assault on Castle Dogcancer.  Considering what we were staring at when we walked in the door, this is a victory in what I hope is a long string of victories that keeps my little girl around for quite some time.   Soon we hope to be full throttle into chemotherapy with enough hope to hold up our chins. Penny is carrying me through this with a bouncy relentlessness.  She is young and healthy in every other way.  The only thing I know for sure the coming months will bring is a deep focus on how much my pets mean to me and, in particular, my relationship with this sweet little lady.  

The idea that I could let her down in the face of this, that I couldn't protect her, is crushing.  At every possible opportunity I'm going to hold my dog and be grateful that I don't have to let go yet.
