Kristian's Appalachian trail speed record attempt
Donation protected
Hi, I'm Kristian Morgan
I'm an ultra endurance athlete, I'm the current record holder for running Britain's longest national trail, the 630 mile South West Coast Path. In July 2021 I will attempt to set a new record on the 2193 mile Appalachian trail in America. The current record is 41 days. To break this record I need to cover 54 miles per day through mountainous terrain .
Charitable Cause
Since 2020 my father has been undergoing cancer treatment, he has been treated with the best science, technology and care that I could have ever imagined and so Cancer research UK will benefit by receiving 10% of all moneys raised. Now my father is a Cancer survivor.
My Appalachian trail history
I produce and host a podcast which I interview people connected to the Appalachian trail. Listen here
2018 I helped set the current World record on the Appalachian trail see here
2019 I had a failed self funded attempt for the Appalachian trail record. I believe this experience will act as a stepping stone towards success.
2020 I planned to go out for a second attempt but the pandemic prevented me entering America. I stayed in the UK and broke the record for the 630 mile South West Coast Path (SWCP) see here
Attempt Costs Include
Return Flights (5 x people) from United Kingdom to America
Internal flights (5 x people) once in America
Van hire plus insurance, satnav and extra charges (8-9 weeks)
Fuel to drive the van
Food (5 x people) for the duration (8-9 weeks)
Motels/hostels (when not sleeping in a tent on the trail)
Roof tent for van
Equipment.
Miscellaneous.
About the Appalachian trail (AT)
The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world. The AT is located in America, covers 14 states and travels through the rugged Appalachian trail mountains. The trail starts at Springer mountain in Georgia and finishes at the the top of Mt Katahdin in Maine. From start to finish anyone hiking the trail will have gone up and down the equivalent of 16 x Mt Everest's.
The Challenge
Each day I will wake at 3:30am and start running by 4am. The first 3hrs of each day will be run during the hours of darkness using a head torch. I will run all day only stopping a few times to meet a small support crew. The support will consist of (Trail names) Gun Section, Campfire aka Girl on fire, Iceman and Blackbeard. During crew stops I will resupply with food and drink. The longest I will need to run between crew stops will be 100 miles through what's called the 100 mile wilderness. Each night I will sleep in a tent on the trail. The trail is home to many wild animals including bear, Mouse, deer, Porcupine and more.
