Appleton Historical Society Steeple Fund

Our mother, Nancy, was all about community.  She dedicated the last sixty of her 88 years to the betterment of the little town of Appleton, Maine, where she was a beloved champion of civic engagement.  From her leadership in scouts and 4H to the town library and historical society, she was a Little-Engine-That-Could, promoting her mission of education and community improvement.  Countless children remember her for teaching them to read, cook, make art, be good stewards of the land, and care about each other.

Now is the time for us to honor her legacy by resurrecting the Appleton Union Meetinghouse to its former glory.  The 1848 Greek Revival edifice welcomed itinerant spiritual leaders of any denomination (hence, “Union”), to provide services in this once-bustling mill town.  Later, it housed the library and was a museum.  More recently, it has been a venue for weddings and gatherings, and even provided the focal point of the picturesque scenery in the 1995 film Casper!  People tried to care for the building;  the town granted it to the Appleton Historical Society, but time and nature seek equilibrium. One hundred and sixty years after it was erected, its towering steeple rests humbly on the ground.

Nancy did so much for Appleton, and the town meant everything to her.  She played important roles in establishing the new elementary school, the new town library, even the local high school in nearby Camden.  It broke her heart when historic buildings in town would fall into disrepair over the decades or were razed.  In the past year, people have been gaining new insight into what they hold dear, as priorities have shifted.  To restore the Meetinghouse steeple was a passion of hers that we hope to revitalize and even kindle in a new generation.
