Appalachian Science Communicators

Donation protected
In a country where 81 percent of people can't name a single living scientist and mistrust of medicine has led to an epidemic of vaccine-preventable diseases, the need for effective public science communication has never been greater.

Aiming to support those who seek to boost scientific literacy in a traditionally underserved part of the country, the newly-formed Appalachian Science Communicators (AppSciComm) offers professional and social opportunities to science communicators living in the Appalachian region. We welcome science communicators of every ilk – practicing journalists, institutional writers, freelancers, talkative scientists, students, podcasters and everyone in between.

AppSciComm hosts regular meet-ups and events centered around the communication and understanding of science. We also have an active Facebook group  where members can ask questions and seek advice from fellow science communicators.

While casual meetups and events are cheap or free, hosting professional development events is not. Attracting experienced speakers and journalists in residence requires funds for travel, lodging, and an honorarium – and that's where you come in.

Since we are still a very young group, the goal of this fundraiser is to help us get off the ground. Then, once we become more established, we plan to transition to a more self-sustaining revenue model.
