MOON CYCLES
A WOMEN OWNED & OPERATED BIKE
AND ROLLERSKATE SHOP
Coming to Arcata, CA in Fall 2016!
ABOUT OUR TEAM
We’re Sage and Sprout two friends with a shared passion for supporting people on wheels in our community. We’re excited to announce that we’re partnering up to create something new and special in Arcata, CA: A female-owned bike AND roller derby shop called Moon Cycles!
As queer women who have found our passions in traditionally male domains, we have a unique perspective on the need for an alternative shop model. We feel inspired to create a place that reflects and supports the diversity of people on wheels in our community and encourages the belonging of everyone—but especially women and other marginalized people. This ties in with our passion for collaboration and multi-use space. Moon Cycles will be more than just a shop. We want to enrich our town by opening up a space that nurtures the talents, creativity of the people in our community.
We share a vision, passion, and experience.
Sage is a lifelong bicycle lover who continues to be endlessly fascinated, amazed, and inspired by the beauty, elegance, and liberating power of bicycles as vehicles for fun, personal empowerment, and life-long learning. She has been honing skills as a mechanic for over 10 years, volunteering with various co-ops along the west coast, working at shops, tuning-up and tinkering with bikes in her home. She created and currently leads the Women and Trans Sundays at the Eureka Bike Kitchen.
Sprout is a local roller derby player and longtime skater. As a carpenter and natural builder, she also knows her way around a tool bench! Sprout is excited about offering skate maintenance, repairs and gently used gear to Humboldt’s growing quad roller skating community. When she’s not sharpening her derby skills on the track, you might catch a glimpse of her rolling past you on the streets of Arcata or Eureka!
ABOUT MOON CYCLES
Moon Cycles will be located in The Neighborhood Surf Shop, a collective of small businesses situated inside of a large airplane hangar, at 1925 Alliance Road, a busy bike thoroughfare adjacent to newly improved trails in Arcata, CA.
We’re on a mission to increase access to quality full-service bike repair and affordable, used commuter bikes, as well as a larger-than-traditional selection of accessories for female-bodied folks. We are all about friendliness and accessibility and are excited to teach, share, and meet people where they’re at, without pretension. We value transparency in our work, and will go above and beyond to explain what’s going on with your bike and answer any questions you may have. Our goal is to empower people around care for their bicycles and to create authentic, respectful relationships, all while having a good time.
And it won’t stop at bikes. As roller derby skaters and fans, we also want to support the badass women and girls in our local scene and revive quad roller skating culture! We will carry and service a variety of skates and new and used derby gear. We will also host workshops on skate mechanics and maintenance.
We at Moon Cycles also feel passionate about collaboration and having fun. Our vision is to be a versatile space that can host other creative events and gatherings such as music performances, film screenings, group bike rides, outdoor skate parties, repair workshops, discussion groups, craft nights, potlucks, and more! We will also support other Humboldt makers by carrying a variety of local art, crafts, and foods. Moon Cycles wants to encourage community, and we invite you to inquire about how we can support your project.
WHY WE ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT
We have the knowledge, the work ethic, the basic tools and a great space to make Moon Cycles a viable community bike and skate repair shop. This project reflects our passion, skills, our D.I.T. (do it together) ethic, and the needs of our community.
As working-class folks, we are also limited in our personal resources. We need to buy many shop supplies to make the shop run more smoothly and increase our efficiency, and your funds will help us do this. We also know that the first few months will be a process of letting people in the community know we are here, so we request help to make this start-up period work, do advertising, and build our business. Our goal is to start small, focusing primarily on bike and rollerskate maintenance and repairs. Within the first 6 months to one year, we plan to have a fuller inventory of used and new bicycles, skate gear, and accessories!
We believe crowdfunding is a powerful, democratic tool to support awesome, important things in the world. By donating, you participate in the development of your own community, and in the creation of a special and unique business and collaborative space.
Please consider contributing whatever you can—we are so grateful for your active support! Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and share our story with your friends and loved ones!
