Art Sevret's Dream: Protect Mount Hope Cabin

Art F. Sevret passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025 from cancer at the age of 80. Art was known for his dedication to family, community, and his love of nature.

Art served as president of the Rockaway Township Sportsman Association for 40 years. During that time Art became the caretaker of the Mount Hope Boy Scout cabin, which is on Mount Hope Pond in Wharton NJ and was built by Boy Scouts in 1937. The scouts gave the property and cabin to the Rockaway Township Recreation Department who still owns it.

Art dedicated much of his time restoring the cabin along with help from the Sportsman club so that Scouts could safely use the cabin for many years to come. Art loved the cabin so very dearly. It was a part of his life. He even took his girlfriend, the love of his life, Laurie to the cabin on a very beautiful snow filled night with a full moon in the sky and proposed to her right there at the cabin. Of course she said yes, and they had a wonderful 40 years of marriage, loving each other, a true match made in heaven.

In 2010 Art was ready to retire from serving as the caretaker of the Mt. Hope Boy Scout Cabin so he reached out to scout leaders from local Boy Scout Troop 165 of Rockaway Township to see if they were willing to take over for him. This Troop had just completed some major repairs to the cabin so Art knew them well and realized they loved the cabin deeply just like he did. To this day and forever more Troop 165 will carry on Arts legacy of maintaining the cabin to its original, glorious beauty.

Art confided in his beloved wife, Laurie Sevret, that in lieu of flowers or a plant a tree he wanted a fundraiser set up to save some money for the cabin to make sure it will remain maintained. At this moment, the cabin needs a few big projects. One project is the resurfacing of the cement on the outside deck that wraps around the cabin. Another big project is the beautiful stone chimney that needs to have the flashing redone and repaired on the outside of the cabin.
