Art & Wellbeing Workshops
I'm fundraising towards some of the materials needed for voluntary work in Livingstone, Zambia in November 2024. I will be delivering a Tree of Life Programme in collaboration with Wayi Wayi Creative Villages for young people in the community.
This methodology helps people affected by hardships and trauma to tell their stories in a ways that can help them to feel stronger, encouraging young people to explore and understand their histories and culture. It can also help them to recognise their skills and celebrate their hopes and dreams for the future, building resilience and self esteem.
Tree of Life can be used as an effective means of helping people learn more about who they are and contribute to improvements in their wellbeing. The programme uses the metaphor of the tree – which is drawn by each participant – to represent different aspects of their lives e.g. roots, ground, trunk, branches, leaves, fruits.
Aside from the art work created together, young people will be able to plant their own Tree as a symbol of both their own growth through the programme, whilst contributing to the ongoing development and sustainability of the village's plant nursery.
Your donations will help support the young peoples transportation, art materials, journals for recording their thoughts, training costs for local volunteers, venue hire, printing of certificates, refreshments and trees for planting. I have self funded my travel, time and accommodation costs for the duration of this work.
Wayi Wayi Creatives Village is a registered NGO and a physical space and is an extension of Wayi Wayi Art Gallery ran by Lawrence and Agness Yombwe, who were awarded a recognition award for their outstanding contribution to the arts development in Zambia in December, 2023.
This exciting collaboration with Agness and Lawrence and volunteer mentor Sunga, will allow me to draw on their local community & cultural knowledge and for us all to exchange and share our creative skills together, which we hope will enable us to offer the young people a truly meaningful and memorable experience within Wayi Wayi Creative village.
It is our vision that by delivering this pilot project we can then evaluate this to see whether this could be a sustainable project to scale up in 2025 with local mentors taking this project forward.
I would be very grateful for any donation you feel able to give and we would be delighted to share with you how we get on!
