Artist Fees - Panic Encyclopedia Residency @ JACK

Donation protected
Hi, Kedian Keohan  here...
I am humbled and grateful that JACK selected me to collaboratively develop a new project, Panic Encyclopedia (during a residency  April 5-19). This is an incredible opportunity to develop this work, but I need your help.

We are prioritizing equitably compensating our collaborators for their time, labor and contributions in the development of this work.

Our $4,000 goal covers the artist fees for all of our performers and designers.
Everything past $4,000 goes toward the cost of filming, materials, and maybe even paying me!

Your donation is both an investment in me as an artist, and a first step to redistributing wealth to many artists and freelancers.
(we have to stop the industry trend of under-paying or not paying collaborators)

Performer Collaborators for Panic Encyclopedia: Cecilia Lynn-Jacobs, Antonio Irizarry, Amanda Houser, Ian Edlund, Kirsten Harvey, Abby Adler

For me, a huge impulse behind making this piece is these six performers I’ve been fortunate enough to devise with and direct. In August 2019, we first performed as an ensemble at a FEAST/Your Uncle Richard performance with *chefs kiss*. This ensemble’s chemistry, connection, and enthusiasm will be invaluable in joyously developing counterpoints to the panic of this time.

Our Project
We are constructing our own Panic Encyclopedia in hopes of illuminating and detaching ourselves from the way in which fear and anxiety are inflicted upon us as much as initiated within ourselves. The book Panic Encyclopedia  acts as a rich source material for exploring how this contemporary state of panic begs for a different kind of coping mechanism--a survival guide in the form of a theatrical encyclopedia. Structured from A-Z, the piece relies on vocal scores, movement, and song to carry you through numerous images --- VCRs, devils, eggs in a frying pan, Guys and Dolls- to create a feeling of claustrophobia as performers try to avoid the apocalypse.

During our two week residency (April 5 - 19)

We will be developing the visual and sonic landscape of our new work, Panic Encyclopedia. Collectively, we will search for antidotes to the ways in which panic is purposely inflicted upon us by the State. We will continue to crystalize our creative process and develop an accessible workshop model for artists of all ages. Our small ensemble is rooted in theatrical intensity, collective humanity, and a love of play.

Our first goal is to make an hour-long draft. We want to discover a visual language and sonic landscape for the piece that enhances, embraces, and intensifies our encyclopedia of panic. A goal of the residency is to film sections of the piece to be used in projections and on our set TV when we create the full production.

Panic Encyclopedia : The Definitive Guide to the Postmodern Scene chronicles the implosion of the modern world into a final singularity by defining certain cultural moments in terms of panic --- from Panic Art to Panic Zombies, and including Panic Elvis, Panic Psychoanalysis, and Panic Sex. The book was written in 1989, but in the 2020s panic has only continued to replicate itself tenfold.
