Help New Artists Showcase!

Donation protected

June 24, 2016 mother, Kelli Rich, and daugher, Micah opened Some Like It Black Creative Arts Bar in the Chicago Bronzeville community. The concept of the cafe/venue came into fruition after the tragic passing of the matriach of our family, Ludie "Cookie" Richardson. Every step of the way, we kept in mind the legacy she left behind. Patrons get a feel of the strength of us women as they are graciously greeted by Kelli, enjoy delicious tacos crafted by Micah, hearing the laughter of baby Genesis whom everyone loves,  and see a photo of Ludie that exudes power and vitality. When you step into the space, you can feel the closeknit, family vibe as soulful music echos through the speakers and beautiful art graces the wall from local artists.

However, Some Like It Black isn't new. Since it's start in 1999, it has been a santuary for poets and musicians from around the world. Not only was it a artisitic hub for Chicagoans, many times SLIB housed artists  who had found themselves on hard times. Since day one, SLIB has considered everyone who enters the doors a part of the family.

We enjoy serving the community through arts and healthy food options.  We would like to continue giving local artists a platform to perform, but without funding it is almost impossible to compensate the musicians, singers & poets.  We appreciate all forms of support whether it be a donation via this page or in person or simply coming in to enjoy some food and a smoothie. Anyone who is willing to volunteer their services/time for new marketing strategies is also appreciated, that way we can gain more traffic. Thank you for your support to one of the community's much loved black owned businesses!
