Arts-n-STEM4Hearts is a registered 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization that promotes healing through the arts and advocates for STEM awareness by supporting STEM initiatives.

As part of our COVID-19 outreach efforts, the Arts-n-STEM4Hearts Foundation wants to support local private research institutions working hard to develop tests and vaccines. For this fundraiser, all donations will be used to support COVID-19 research. The Arts-n-STEM4Hearts Foundation wants to raise funds to be donated to Georgetown University to support these research efforts, which are vital in accelerating the research and development process and stopping the pandemic's spread.
One challenge that has arisen with the COVID-19 virus is the inefficiency of detection methods. These methods have reported high false negative and false positive rates. Georgetown University researchers have engineered a pathogen detection system that is rapid, producing results in minutes.
The system is sensitive and specific, can test for multiple types of organisms simultaneously, and produces extremely low false positive and false negative rates. In the past, the innovation proved to be capable of detecting and distinguishing between the four types of Dengue virus, as well as differentiating between virulent and nonvirulent strains of anthrax.
The innovation amplifies signals from fluorescent probes that recognize the target DNA or RNA sites of the pathogen. The speed of this assay is accomplished because it uses a special, continuous rolling circle amplification mechanism of a small region on the target’s DNA or RNA.
All funds will be used to purchase primers, probes, enzymes, samples, and other reagents necessary for developing a SARS-COV-2 diagnostic test using this detection system. Since the detection system has had success with RNA viruses, the initial design and development should be quick.
All funds will help GU researchers achieve the following milestones:
· Development of Rapid High-Fidelity Covid-19 Molecular Test
· Human sample validated diagnostic for SARS-COV-2
· Automated diagnostic for SARS-COV-2
· Point of care diagnostic system
