Arwen's Journey
Seth and Becca Mallay, along with their five children, have been serving the Lord as medical missionaries since 2015 in Togo, West Africa where Seth is a Family Doctor providing compassionate medical care to the poor and sick. Just before Christmas 2017, the Mallay’s oldest daughter Arwen (10 years old) developed unusual pains in her neck, back, and legs and underwent some simple testing in Togo. The early tests showed a mass in her abdomen, so she was urgently sent back to Michigan for further evaluation and treatment at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Unfortunately, the evaluation has shown that Arwen has Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in her pelvis that has already spread to her spine and hip bones.
Neuroblastoma is a cancer of nerve cells and is the most common type of solid tumor outside of the brain in children. Stage 4 is the most advanced stage of the disease and requires long and aggressive treatments. The Mallays have been told to expect at least 2 years of treatments involving chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and a probable stem cell transplant.
Since Arwen’s journey first began, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of support for her and the Mallay family. We would love to continue to show our support for the Mallays as they face the many hurdles ahead. Prior to moving to Africa as medical missionaries, the Mallays sold their house, their cars, and most of their possessions. In the process of urgently leaving Togo, they were forced to leave many of their personal belongings behind yet again. As the family transitions back to the United States for Arwen's cancer treatments, they will face many immediate tangible needs such as finding and furnishing a new house and securing a vehicle large enough for a family of seven. We have created this page to help offset some of these relocation and medical expenses as they focus on Arwen’s journey with neuroblastoma. Please consider donating to this urgent need and please pray for Arwen, her family, and the medical teams caring for her. We continue to trust in God’s provision, goodness, and power as we walk through this journey with Arwen.
