Walter Fuller left homeless at 70
Donation protected
Walter Fuller, the dedicated caretaker of Ormond Beach in Oxnard, is facing an uncertain future as his contract will not be renewed next year. As a prominent figure in the community and a long-time guardian of the area’s coastline, it’s a travesty to think his position is being terminated.
Walter chooses to act as the unofficial caretaker of Ormond Beach without compensation, and many in the community look forward to his comforting presence whenever they visit the beach. He’s always there to offer a smile, a friendly welcome, and news about the goings-on of the wildlife in the area.
Before Walter, the beach had been a prime location to dump bodies, trash, and toxic waste. After Walter, crime dropped and visitors to the area grew 11 times over.
He's played a pivotal leading role in preserving Ormond Beach's habitat for the Western Snowy Plover, a threatened species "of special concern" by the State of California. In doing so, he has tirelessly performed services for both the state and federal government in acts of kind and selfless environmental patriotism. His copious notes about the area's birds have even been used to help the nearby Navy base develop flight plans to prevent bird strikes.
This man has worked 24 hours 7 days a week for 365 days of the year. Walter chooses to do this work out of love. Now at the age of 71, he is being “let go” and will be homeless in June when his contract with the city expires.
Where he will live is worrying him as he has no family around and no home to go to. He has been living in a trailer which is property of the city and he must relinquish at contracts end.
As he has no savings he will have to live out of his donated car on the streets. He deserves better, and we are hoping to raise money for a place to stay with running water and a warm place to finish out his life. Please help if you can. Thank you.
