Emergency Face Shields for the NHS
Donation protected
The NHS is currently severely lacking PPE such as face shields necessary to fight COVID-19. They are currently resorting to drastic measures such as tying bin bags over their heads .
We are a team of engineering students across the southeast of England working from our homes.
Starting from scratch a mere one week ago, have already delivered over 100 face shields to frontline staff in Hampshire using 3D printers to produce this design. Update: Currently over 300 have been delivered to NHS sites.
Our goal is to produce and distribute so much PPE that the NHS start sending it back again.
Each mask costs £3 to produce and deliver to the NHS staff who desperately need them.
A donation of £30 would be enough to equip your local GP practice.
A donation of £150 would allow us to buy an additional 3D printer to accelerate production.
Currently, we have secured the resources to produce over 2000 face shields.
With £12000 we would be able to produce over 4000 units at a rate of 150 a day!
With £35000 we would be able to produce over 11000 units at a rate of 300 a day!
With £50000 we would be able to produce over 15000 units at a rate of 400 a day!
We are currently supported by engineering companies such as Hydra and Motion Robotics and also by the University of Southampton.
Our Backstory:
We are a team of final year engineering students from the south coast and as you might imagine we are no strangers to the idea of working from home. After all, a lockdown is often how a final year engineer will spend his/her exam seasons (Only venturing out to replenish the pot noodle
supplies). However, we are in lockdown with the rest of the nation, without any exams to take, or the ability to work from home. The current government advice is that we don’t go home and so many of us are shut in our uni houses without a university open to attend.
A week ago Dr Hannah Harring (pictured in the image at the top of this page) reached out to us for some face shields for her GP practice. Over the course of the next week, a team was assembled capable of delivering 50 a day, with 100 being delivered by the end of the week.
Many of us have built our own 3D printers - small rapid prototyping machines capable of printing plastic parts, and so we reached out to engineering students also stuck in university houses and pooled resources, setting up in empty rooms we had in our houses.
We managed to fill the spare rooms in our houses with 14 printers and by manning these in shift around the clock we produced 100 face masks for local practices by the end of the week. But here’s the thing, we’d like to do more, but we need some help doing it.
We’ve cost each face-mask at £3 whose components are the printed plastic to mount the mask to, a clear acetate sheet to protect the face and a small length of elastic to hold the mask in place.
If we can raise this amount of money then we can continue to upscale our production and make it cheaper to produce each mask, after all, there is currently a small army of engineering students who, like us, are neither able to go home or to university.
With our exam season cancelled and future internships/graduate schemes on hold, we have decided to dedicate this project the same round-the-clock commitment as our semi-annual revision cramming sessions and are looking to continue to expand what we are capable of delivering not just to face shields but to ventilator parts and respirator masks. We are also reaching out to companies across the nation to help our cause but most importantly we need your support to draw attention to our cause, so please share and circulate this if you can.
Thank you and we hope to keep you all posted as we go!
