But unlike most teen boys, Asher has scoliosis. And it isn’t just one curve in his back; he has three!!!

Then the world shut down in March 2020, and all activities cancelled and many parks were closed.

They have researched the different options for treatment, including the various types of surgery. However, they strongly feel that now is not the right time to pursue the surgical route. They have found an alternative treatment which is non-invasive, but much more intense, which in the long run will strengthen Asher’s back while reducing the curves. This treatment is only offered in one clinic, and they are blessed that the clinic is located only 35 miles away.
The treatment starts with 3 weeks of physical therapy and muscle training, followed by 3 months of at home exercises on special equipment for 2 hours a day. Every 3 months, Asher will do another week-long intensive at the clinic. Asher will also be fitted with a special back brace, customized to help with his scoliosis. This back brace will be refitted, and often replaced throughout the treatment.
The visits to the doctor, the specialized exercise equipment, and the back brace are very expensive, and by the end of the treatment, the cost could be close to $60,000. Their insurance will cover little to none of the cost.
They are a 1-income household with 7 children ages 13, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2. The primary breadwinner, is an electrician, and often times when there is a dip in the economy, the construction industry is one of the ones to suffer. They homeschool, and pay for much of their children’s educational needs out-of-pocket as well.
They believe that this is the best option for healing Asher, and if he does need surgery down the road before he reaches adulthood, they are confident that this treatment will make all outcomes much better than they would be if they go straight to surgery right now.
Thank you for all of your help and generosity.
