As some of you already know, we have been facing harder than usual times medically and financially. The last 3 months has been hell from temporarily losing work on AMI until it reopens, to losing our home to another hurricane, this time it was considered 90% damaged after the storm when it caused my roof to fly off and allowing the elements in ruining almost everything we own and continues to as it sits molding. I am in the process of dealing with my insurance company, but I don't have the best coverage, and they aren't being the most cooperative. Fema declared our home 90% damaged and unlivable, but unfortunately could not help because I have homeowners insurance whether limited or otherwise. To make matters worse,
right around the time of the storm, Kurtis developed a chronic infection which has been hard to treat, which has led to misdiagnosing an infection which lead to amputations and ongoing critical medical issues and expenses. He has not been able to work since October, nor will he for a while, so now we face the newest challenge of losing medical care due to lack of insurance. We are working to aquire COBRA, we are awaiting the cost sheet, however there can be a 3 month lapse where he is not covered until it's completely processed they stated. The biggest challenge there again is financial responsibility. We have spent all our savings and maxed out credit cards paying mortgage, insurance, and all costs attached to our home as well as medical costs and daily living. Him not having proper medical care and being told the false hope over and over that " 'This' will make you better and you will be back to work next week" clearly has failed and lead us to this point.
Kurtis is a Type 1 Brittle Diabetic, so proper medical care/ treatment is crucial to his healing and well being, as it will be a long road ahead if we can continue medical treatment. It is now become a matter of saving him from becoming septic which in this case could be potentially deadly, or losing his entire foot, or even possibly his leg, and it shouldn't have to come to that sadly but it's really possible! The positive news in this time that gives us some hope ...
This past week we met with a new surgeon/ specialist who seems to have a plan in which our primary and home health all can agree seems best, and is going to try to get Kurt in with the all the proper doctors and get him the proper care, but it's up to us to secure his insurance to continue this road!
We are faced with the difficult challenges of choosing to pay mortgage vs car vs medical expenses vs food on the table which are all necessary.
We need to be able to continue home health care, wound care, IV antibiotic infusions, specialist visits, copays, test procedures and surgeries, and be able to have the means to travel to all these and be able to pay for. We have spent all of our time researching and applying for any type of assistance with no luck. We had advocates also try. Sadly its come to this, us asking for empathy. I know so many are having issues or have had similar.
I am swallowing my pride for the greater good, I am reaching out to you all asking for your help and generosity because we are out of resources. My family is small, but has been helpful in every way they can especially housing us, and done what they can.
We need help before we lose literally everything. Every single $1 makes a difference and is appreciated beyond belief.
As I am writing this it gets worse!!!! We were just informed that sadly we (Including my daughter and our pets) only have 30 days left to stay where we have been temporarily residing with family (due to it being a 55+ and the HOA rules) .
