Ashley Mizell Clinical Trial

Hello family & friends!
We have some incredibly exciting news to share! Ashley has just been accepted into a clinical trial, the SCOTS 2 - Stem Cell Ophthalmology Treatment Study II, with Dr. Jeffrey Weiss in Coconut Creek, FL! This is the only doctor in the world who is doing this type of treatment on patients that have no other treatment options. The trial was recommended from Ashley’s primary eye doctor at KU Med Center just last week. After collecting lots of information, calls with multiple specialists & having her medical records submitted to the clinical trial for review...SHE HAS BEEN ACCEPTED for a July 14th treatment date!!! It is simply amazing news as we didn’t even realize this would be a possibility for Ashley until many years down the road, if ever.
Ashley’s doctor is optimistic that this stem cell treatment could actually restore some of her lost vision!! I’m sure you can all imagine how much this would greatly improve Ashley’s quality of life! How much eye sight might be restored? There is no way of knowing for sure, as each case is different, but there are some very encouraging success stories that give us SO MUCH HOPE!! And just the thought of Ashley being able to SEE the sweet faces of her three growing boys again, is enough to outweigh any possible side effects!
Ashley would have to report to Florida on the Sunday prior to her treatment. On Monday she will have a pre-op meeting & exam, Tuesday she will have the treatment (it is an outpatient procedure that will take about one hour) & on Wednesday she will have a post-op follow up appointment. Assuming all goes as planned, she will be able to return home after that & then continue to be seen by her regular eye doctor at KU. Her eyes will continue to heal over the next several months post surgery, and God willing, she will regain some of her vision & her independence!!
In order to get this potentially life changing surgery, Ashley will have to pay $19,600 as an upfront payment for the surgery, plus travel expenses on top of that! This clinical trial is a patient sponsored clinical study conducted by a group of research physicians, there is no grant support or pharmaceutical support. Therefore patients must pay for the study which includes treatment at a fully licensed surgical center, operating room, under anesthesia from board certified anesthesiologist, bone marrow aspirations with a board certified orthopedic surgeon, FDA cleared medical device for separation of stem cells, technicians, etc, as well as the out of pocket travel expenses. Unfortunately, none of these expenses would be covered under insurance.
This is where we need your help. If you are able, please consider donating to her cause. $25,000 is our dream goal, with a quick turnaround of just three weeks until payment is due!! With that, Ashley & Mike should be able to cover the treatment & travel, lodging, etc without taking out any additional loans. This is a lot of money, we know. And many, if not all of you, have already been so generous & have helped in so many ways! And we are so very grateful! But you guys...all in all, this would be a small price to pay for such a priceless gift, not just to Ashley but to Mike & their boys as well!
We appreciate all the love & support everyone has shown Ashley, Mike & their boys over the past year & a half since they started on this journey! It has been a continuous outpouring & WE CAN FEEL THE LOVE!! Whether you are able to donate financially or not, please keep your prayers coming, especially as she begins this next chapter!
