Asmerom Oz Tsegay

Asmerom Tsegay, affectionately known as Oz, was born on December 19, 1990, in Buffalo, New York before moving to Toronto, Canada with his mom, sister, and brother. As the youngest of three, Asmerom grew up surrounded by love and projected it back tenfold. His parents, Tsegay Tesfagaber and Dahab Gebreyesus, gave him the gift of a joyous spirit and an unwavering love. Between his older sister and brother, Senite and Adam Tsegay, Asmerom had the best of both worlds; a best friend and a guardian he can always turn to.
From the very beginning, he was a beacon of light, a kind hearted soul who touched the lives of everyone he met.
At the early age of 6 years old Asmerom had open heart surgery that stayed with him for the rest of his life, however that did not stop Oz from living his life to the fullest.
As a student, a colleague and a community member Asmerom made friendships everywhere he went and left an impression that no one would forget. Within his Eritrean Canadian community, Asmerom was truly one-of-a-kind, a light in every room with a smile that could brighten even the darkest day.
He was a gifted athlete, excelling on the soccer field when he was a part of the Eritrean Youth Soccer League, and his love for dancing always brought joy to those around him. At any event, you could always count on Asmerom to grab the mic, emcee the moment and keep the energy alive. Asmerom’s selflessness was unmatched. He treated everyone with kindness and respect, especially his elders. Nothing could lower his spirit—he was always laughing, always smiling, no matter the circumstance. Asmerom had a very unique way of making everyone feel valued and loved.
He was a loyal friend, a cherished sibling, a loving son, and an amazing uncle to his nephew Méssai and niece Malaya who he shared a birthday with and a special bond. His impact on our lives is immeasurable. Asmerom leaves behind his parents; Tsegay Tesfagaber and Dahab Gebreyesus, sister Senite Tsegay, brother Adam Tsegay, and a host of friends and family who will always remember his warmth, laughter, and his unwavering positivity.
Although Asmerom is no longer with us, his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him. We are forever grateful for the time we had with Asmerom and while our hearts are heavy with his loss, we find comfort in the countless memories and the immense love he shared so freely. His legacy of joy, kindness, and love will continue to inspire us to cherish life, care for one another, live fully and always find reasons to smile, just as he did every day of his life.
Gone way too soon and will never be forgotten.
May God have mercy on his soul and grant him eternal peace.

During this incredibly difficult time of grief, your love, support, and presence have meant the world to us.
