Assist The Roby's Fight Against Stage 4 Cancer

MY FUNDRAISING GOAL: I have set up this page to build awareness, share my parent’s story and raise funds to assist my parents with utilizing every available resource to fight against cancer. Many have asked what you can do to help, and contributing to this page reflects your generosity and kindness. Along with your contribution, we boldly request your prayers.

THEIR STORY: Jerry and Leontyne Roby (Pops and Mom) have been tied together for 25 years and recently celebrated their milestone anniversary, July 28, 2022. They reside in Rankin County, Mississippi, and both have been employed in Jackson, Mississippi – Hinds County. Pops is a former City of Jackson employee, and Mom is a Mississippi College School of Law (MC Law) employee. Due to health issues, after 30 years of employment, Pops was forced into medical retirement. To assist Pops as his supportive wife, over the last four years, Mom has continued working at MC Law part-time until recently. Combined, they have seven children and seventeen grandchildren.

THE BATTLE: In December 2018, after several months of bodily pains and visits with medical specialists, Pops was diagnosed with rectal cancer, and within hours, he and mom sat in a surgeon’s office, addressing what the next 6-12 months might look like. Whatever the journey, God would have to be their anchor as swift lifesaving procedures would have to be taken. The first of many procedures were ostomy surgery - this was the beginning of Pops and Mom's “new normal” life.

With surgery and chemotherapy being inevitable and the possibility of radiotherapy, my parents knew that there was a long road ahead. Specifically, they knew that there would be lengthy hospital stays, multiple trips to see doctors, periods of sickness and pain, and even times when family and friends would not be able to visit.

As one might imagine, this entire process is overwhelming, with Pops and Mom leaning on their support system more than ever. Particularly their children, brothers and sisters, family and friends, Mississippi College School of Law, local community and church family.

Pops has attempted chemotherapy and recently completed radiotherapy. Unfortunately, the diagnosis and treatment plan has not been successful, and the impact is being felt throughout the family. About two weeks ago, Pops received a devastating report as doctors informed my parents that cancer had spread and there was not anything more medically that could be done. Despite this information, medical professionals do not have the final say. We are a Christian family of faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whose word assures us that this is not more than we can bear. Pops has told everyone he will fight until there is no more breath inside of him, and this alone – offers all of us comfort and hope.

HOW WILL YOUR FUNDS HELP: This fundraiser will help ease my parents’ financial burden by assisting with covering the costs associated with alternative cancer treatment and hospice care in hopes of increasing Pop’s chance of survival. In addition, all of the contributions will help with living expenses and household necessities, considering that no one in the household is working full-time.
