This is hard. Thinking about the people you love dying is hard. Asking for help is hard. Watching a parent fight an illness for 11 years only to have the disease win is often almost unbearable. My name is Jessica Rodriguez. As many of you know, I have been my mother's main caregiver for more than 11 years with the help of my father Fernando Estrada. My mom's battle with renal failure, brain infection, and sepsis is coming to an end. Both my father, brother, and I have used up all sick, vacation days at work and savings. As we had to travel multiple times a week from Moss landing to UCSF hospital in San Francisco. We have chosen to remain at my mother's side. My mother was afraid of being alone and dying. We made her a promise that we would be at her side.
On April 30, my mother, Jessie Gomez, received her kidney transplant after being on the waiting list for 10 years and enduring dialysis. Unfortunately, that came with many complications. On September 20, my mom fell and fractured her hip. She received hip surgery and was sent to a rehabilitation center temporarily since they wouldn't let us take her home due to medical needs. After that, everything went downhill. Her kidney started failing, then came sepsis and other issues. My mom fought hard, was on life support twice and doctors have done everything possible. My mom wanted to come back home and on 11/12/24 she arrived back to CHOMP hospital in Monterey to enter hospice and be closer to family. It's just a matter of time until she joins her loved ones in heaven. We are left with the weight of grief and financial burdens. We are asking for help to allow us to remain at her side and for funeral expenses, as our family is struggling to cover the costs. Any contribution, big or small, would mean the world to us and would help us honor the incredible woman who was the heart of our family.
