Atlantic Thread

I am a textile artist making a journey this autumn along the Atlantic Coast. Over two months, I'm visiting 42 independent yarn shops through Ireland, Brittany, Spain, Portugal and Morocco, crocheting a scarf each day, as well as a piece for a large blanket which, sewn together, will connect all of those places and people together. In such times of division, it seems important to be reminded of the ancient connections along this coastline, where we all share the same ocean, the same wind and the same sunset, and because of these simple everyday things, I am making a simple journey, camping and travelling by bus and ferry.  After the journey, I will be exhibiting the blanket, an embroidered map I have made of the route, along with photos of the ocean and the yarn shops.

I am partially funding the project myself, but the main source is taking pledges for the scarves, which I will make and send with a hand-written letter from somewhere along the journey. If you would like to pledge in this way, please tell me the colour(s), type of yarn and if there is a particular place along the route you would like the scarf to come from, and the postal address of the recipient.  These are the yarns that will be used in the final blanket, so your involvement in its design will also connect you with all the places and other people along the road. Pledges for the scarves are £55. I will be inviting everyone to the exhibition in February, so it would be wonderful if all those available on the day would wear their scarves, and see the part of the blanket which they helped design.
