3000 mile Solo and Unsupported Atlantic Row
Donation protected
This December, I will row solo and unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean in my boat ‘Odysseus’ with the event The World’s Toughest Row. In doing so, I’ll become the first woman of colour to row any ocean solo. My aim with this challenge is to encourage more diversity and representation in adventure sports and rowing, especially for women who are hugely underrepresented in the outdoors.
Rowing for Charity
With this challenge, I’ll be fundraising for the Mental Health Foundation who work to change negative social perceptions around mental health and focus on research and prevention of poor mental health through community led programmes and policy advocacy. Why row the Atlantic?
I have always loved the outdoors and adventure sports that push us and show us we’re capable of more than we believe. However lack of diversity in adventure sport has always been glaringly apparent to me. While there are a myriad of reasons for this, I hope to inspire more people of colour and women into adventure sport and rowing. By participating, I hope one day that women and people of colour in adventure sport isn’t something distinctive, but normal.
The Challenge
The World’s Toughest Row runs annually, where amateur rowers of all ages and nationalities row 3000 nautical miles from the Canary Islands to Antigua. I’ll be rowing in ‘Odysseys’ a 25ft ocean-rowing boat, designed to withstand the tough marine environment. Self-sufficient and producing zero emissions, the boat’s electronics and water desalinator run on solar power. Sleep deprivation, isolation, 20ft waves and the forces of the ocean are just a few of the things I will face, making this as much a mental challenge as a physical one.
Your Support
The success of this challenge is reliant on funding and sponsorship for various pieces of equipment, training and supplies. Any support toward my aims is hugely appreciated.
