Hello,
My name is Olivia Rocha and I am a second year pre-medical student at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Currently, I am studying Health Science with a major specialization in Human Health Science. I am an active Ambassador volunteer in my school community and I mentor first year students, through my role as a Peer Leader. Beyond this, I actively contribute to my campus community, both virtually and through eventful interactions, as a Campus Community Promoter. I am a full-time student as well as a part-time waitress working within the hospitality industry at a local restaurant.
Recently, I was accepted as a shadowing Fellow in the Atlantis Abroad Medical Fellowship Program. Through this program, students have the unique opportunity to shadow international physicians and experience authentic medical culture in a foreign healthcare atmosphere. During this fellowship, I will have the chance to learn about various medical specialties, particularly surgical related. Through this opportunity, I will observe patient care in the form of consultations, procedures and surgical interventions. While studying abroad, I will be able to gain real life experience that will be applicable in my future career in medicine.
Since, childhood I have had a strong interest and passion for medicine. The human body, the ultimate work of artistry, is a complicated puzzle that attracts my interest in regards to its solution relative to illness and trauma. In having passion for medicine, I aspire to become a Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon, who specializes in traumatology. Right from young, I have always believed my purpose to be that of a health care professional. This vocation was confirmed at the age of 16 through my academic and volunteer journey as well as the support of my family. Throughout my life, I have actively participated in various communities through volunteer work. I have always believed in helping others, and that it is one's responsibility to compassionately serve those surrounding them. I believe in people helping people, and as a surgeon I will be able to care for others in need of healing.
This fellowship, will equip me with additional skills necessary to pursue my passion and dream in medicine. Through this program, I will expand my knowledge and have the advantage of experience. This program will set me apart from other medical school applicants and drive my competitive ability to stand out as a young professional. I plan on applying to Medical School this upcoming fall in hopes of early acceptance.
As a low-income student, an opportunity such as this is not possible as I financially do not have the means. In order to attend university, I have been substantially fortunate to have qualified for free-tuition from OSAP and received multiple scholarships based on academic performance, community involvement, perseverance and financial need. In order to achieve my goals, I remain determined and persistent in risking everything to make it possible.
Although I financially am unable to provide myself with this opportunity, I am turning to my community to help me, so that one day I can help you. This program will cost approximately $6,000 which I obviously cannot afford. My hope, is that with your help I may be able to experience this opportunity despite my low-income status barrier. Through gofundme, I will be able to immerse myself in this once in a lifetime opportunity. All donations, no matter how small, are significantly appreciated.
