ATTU Short film at The Northern Film School

Donation protected
Part documentary and part drama, ATTU tells the true story of Attu Island and Isobel Wylie Hutchison. A story of tragedy, endurance and remarkable thistles.

Summary of our project

  • Attu Island is the western most point in Alaska and was home to the Saskinax̂ people for more than 10,000 years. Isobel Wylie Hutchison was a Scottish botanist, filmmaker and arctic explorer who visited Attu in 1936.
  • Set in a radio studio in the late 1940s. Isobel looks back on her time with the Attuan people on their island ten years earlier. After Isobel's visit the island was captured during the WWII and all forty Attuans were taken away as prisoners.
  • Attu's story is also one that is so often overlooked, we feel it's significant and should be told by Saskinax̂ people. We are working with the Atux̂ Forever Organisation for Saskinax̂ people to tell their own stories of Attu within the film. They are guiding this project to ensure this story is told with authenticity and respect.
  • We feel Isobel's story of pioneering exploration and kindness is something that doesn't get the attention it deserves. We are also working with Jo Woolf, writer in residence at the RSGS who has an extensive knowledge of Isobel Wylie Hutchison, she is helping guide the vision for Isobel in this film.
  • We are raising funds for archive footage and image licenses as well as for our brilliant art department team to create a 1940s radio studio at the Northern Film School in Leeds. These funds are going to add authenticity to this project.
