Auburn's Overcrowded Masjid Needs You
Tax deductible
Assalamu Alaikum. The Auburn Islamic Center (AIC) at Auburn, Alabama is organizing this fundraiser to build a new masjid. AIC serves the Auburn-Opelika community and surrounding areas in Lee County, Alabama, with over 700 Muslims in the area. Our current masjid, housed in a two-story residence purchased in 1990, can only accommodate 120 people for Juma prayers and 15-20 cars. An additional 70-80 people pray at the university, but overcrowding remains a significant issue, making it difficult to bring the entire community together for prayers or events. Our Sunday school, which includes over 80 children, also faces space constraints every week. The only time we gather as a full community is during Eid, held in a park with over 500 attendees.
A large part of our community is international students and their families. For many Muslim students away from home, masjid is one place of solace and retreat that makes it possible to stay in the path of deen. Because of the current space limitation and parking issues, these students are not able to gather at one place to perform Juma prayer, enjoy iftar, and attend taraweeh at night or any large event.
To address these challenges, AIC has purchased a 5-acre land at 740 Mill Creek Road (directions: South College, past I-85, left on Shell Toomer, right on Mill Creek). The land, bought in April 2014, is zoned for a new mosque. The architectural firm, Seay Seay and Litchfield P.C., is designing the project. Phase I is projected to cost over 2.5 million dollars and we have $615,000 in the New Masjid Fund. We aim to start construction in 2025 In Sha Allah.
Please donate generously to help us build a new masjid for our growing community. Visit https://www.auburnmuslims.org to learn more about this community. Jazakum Allah Khair!
