ABOUT THE BOOK:
"AUGUSTUS AND ME"
A children's book about the history of Orient, NY
to be published June 2018
WORDS BY JAN ROSE
WATERCOLORS BY ALAN BULL
44 pages / Hardcover
"Augustus and Me is a book for young people about a real guy named Augustus Griffin. Augustus owned an inn on Village Lane in Orient, NY and he voted for Washington and Lincoln during his nearly 100 year lifespan! We know all this because he kept a journal about his wife, Deziah, their six kids and much more. It was published in 1850. Augustus and Me is told through art as well as story. In the story you will meet Augustus through the eyes of an athletic kid who comes to visit family on Village Lane, but who is not too thrilled to be there as the whole place is like a history book. Around midnight he peers out his bedroom window and spots a strange movement in the night shadows. Want to explore? So did he! As he sneaks across the lane and is led behind Village House, he meets Augustus....and the adventure begins! Get ready for some surprises, fun, and maybe a different point of view!" ~ Jan Rose, author of Augustus and Me
I will be illustrating Augustus and Me during Spring 2018. After dreaming of the chance to do a project like this all my life, this will be my very first children's book. This will also be the first fully illustrated hardcover children's book about Orient, NY, on the North Fork of Long Island. I love how Jan's story allows for a greater understanding of the real people and places that make up the history of Orient. I also get to draw a real - life cat named Mr. Hughes, who plays an integral role in the story. The printing and editing costs have been covered by a few generous donors and now I'm looking for a few art lovers to help fund the creation of the watercolors! Funds raised will help cover the production costs, materials and the time to paint all of the original watercolor illustrations over an intensive 5 weeks. This book is a real labor of love for me, giving me a chance to draw some of the historic buildings and characters of my ancestry, and your support is deeply appreciated. Help me to reach my goal and receive a signed copy of the book, your name in the credits or even original Augustus and Me art!
