This cute little girl is Auni Ray Naulu, daughter of Dallin and Caitlin Naulu, she was born December 11, 2013. At 7 months old, Auni was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1.
SMA Type 1 is a life-limiting condition. Children with Type 1 have a life expectancy of less than 2 years if not supported with mechanical ventilation. SMA is a motor neuron disease that causes muscle weakness and atrophy (wasting). SMA affects the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, breathing and swallowing. When the muscles used for breathing and coughing are affected, it can lead to an increased risk for pneumonia and other respiratory infections, as well as breathing difficulty during sleep.
