In loving memory of Baby Nathaniel

We are looking to raise funds for Emilie and Robin, who have recently lost their little boy Nathaniel.

So from my understanding, our son died from a traumatic delivery.

 

He was a perfectly healthy baby boy through my pregnancy. My water broke at 37 weeks and I went to the hospital. They sent me home twice and the third time they kept me but they waited 36 hours to induce me because they didn’t have enough doctors

 

When they finally did, 36 hours later which is past the recommended 24 hours, I kept pushing but the baby couldn’t get past my pubic bone as my bone structure was too small to give birth vaginally but she kept pushing me to push. I had told her multiple times that I was fine with doing a c-section as I’ve had a bunch of surgeries before and it doesn’t scare me. She was determined to get him out naturally even though it wasn’t physically possible.

 

The doctor then told me she would vacuum him out. I didn’t know what that was and she did not give me or my partner any information as to the damage it can do. She did not give us the risks and consequences. She simply said she felt she can get him out that way and did it. I have a room full of witnesses that saw that.

 

They waited 4 and half hours of having me push before they did an emergency c section

 

The baby was so stuck in my pubic bone from the vacuum that the doctor applied a bunch of pressure, too much pressure she admitted to me later, to his head to get him out.

 

When he got out, at 9pm, he didn’t cry. They put a respirator on him and he was breathing on his own. They said they were going to take him to NICU just in case. They only focused on his breathing and didn’t notice the bleed until a few hours later and told us they didn’t have the right equipment to see what was wrong.

 

He was born at about 9pm and wasn’t sent to childrens hospital until 1am. He died in my arms at 5am.

 

I was told by the paediatrician that he died from multiple organ failure due to a lack of oxygen and a skull bleed. And from what I’ve been told, the skull bleed happened due to the vacuuming and her pressure on his skull when taking his out. A reminder as well that I did not consent to vacuuming and was not told the risks about it.

 

The paediatrician said it was an extremely traumatic delivery and he’s never seen a situation like this before. He also said the baby had a heart attack due to the stress of the delivery. He thinks the doctor also might’ve fractured his skull from the pressure. The paramedic said that lions gate hospital should’ve never waited that long to call them.

 

I was diagnosed with endometritis (infection of uterus) and a kidney infection due to prolonged labour (36 hours between water breaking and getting induced is unusual and causes high risk of infection). The c-section also caused me to be exposed to more infection. I was not given antibiotics which I should’ve been given. When I was released from the hospital (womens) I was also released with no antibiotics.

 

After speaking to many lawyers, it turns out we cannot sue because in BC children aren’t covered by the law for medical malpractice or negligence. They aren’t considered income bearers which is what is needed to qualify for it. All we can do is make a complaint to the hospital and to the college of physicians who probably won’t do more then reprimand the doctor. We are still waiting for the autopsy results which will take a few months so we can’t even put him to rest or bring him home until possibly this summer which is ever more messed up. And we won’t know what fully happened until then either.
