In summary:

European youth dance group "Ausma" (sunrise) is raising funds for traditional Latvian folk costumes to take part in the XXVII Latvian song and XVII dance festival in July of 2023. Whilst all attempts are being made to reduce costs and make pieces ourselves, there are certain things beyond our scope of knowledge and we have to ask for specialist help. Together we hope to raise 2,000 eur.

About us:

The youth dance group "Ausma" is a new traditional Latvian dance group in Europe. The dream to meet up and dance together has been cherished for a while now, however, the participants live far away from each other. Some have moved with their parents, others have moved for their studies, whilst others still have lived abroad for a long time. Therefore it is a true joy, that we have managed to organize ourselves and regularly meet up. There were many people happy to join and ready to commit to coming to regular rehearsals. Currently, there are 4 different European countries represented by our dancers and at least 8 disparate cities. This is an experiment, that to our knowledge hasn't been attempted so far, and the only reason we're succeeding is that all of the dancers are helping make this dream a reality. Our strength truly is our diversity. Those who have a lot of dance experience are helping the least experienced dancers, those with a good head for numbers are helping manage our finances, others, still, with an artistic flair have helped design our logo, whilst others help with the organisational side of things.

We have a goal:

It is far easier to come together if there is a shared goal we are all working towards. Our goal has been set. We have been working very diligently to learn the dances for the XXVII Latvian song and XVII dance festival. However, dancing isn't all there is to taking part in the festival. We also require traditional Latvian folk costumes. We have chosen to make the costume of Pitrags (a small fishing village on the west coast of Latvia). Pitrags is special as it is still considered a Livonian village - a small ethnic minority. At the moment we are aiming to create the most basic version of the costume, but there is a lot of scope for further embellishing and improving it over the years to come. Our current hope, therefore, is to make the basic things necessary - skirts, shirts, vests and trousers.

We're doing what we can ourselves (and learning new skills)

Wherever possible we are trying to sew and make the costumes ourselves. We are very grateful to the Brussels traditional Latvian handcraft club, who are organising masterclasses in the making of traditional costumes. With their help, we have already almost completed the making of the skirts. And, in March, there are already plans for another masterclass in the making of traditional shirts. It is important to mention that almost all of the dancers had no prior experience in sewing of any kind but under the guidance of the handcraft club girls and an expert, Laila Puķīte, from Latvia, the necessary skills were quickly learned. Similarly, we have learned to knit and make our socks too. Where there is a will there is a way and we are very determined.
