Help us save Isla! We are raising funds to help with her vet care, PT, and training in order to match her up with the best home.

Story

Isla was adopted on February 10th from a family that was relocating, and unfortunately, being a smart Aussie, she figured out how to wiggle her way out of her harness and escaped from her new owner on the same day she was adopted around the Greenville area. Her story was posted on the Nextdoor app and the Dallas community came together to help rescue her. Unlike most lost dogs, Isla was terrified of people and darted when she was approached, making her rescue a challenging task.

This scared girl wasn’t given the resources she needed because of the storm. We reached out to several catchers, rescue groups, and animal services. Due to the weather, they were unable to drive and were also overwhelmed with other cases.

The outpouring of support began when temperatures started to drop and the warnings of an unprecedented storm became a reality. Members of the community started messaging each other, posting her last known locations, driving on the treacherous roads, and posting flyers to get this sweet girl out of the cold. I have never seen so many replies on Nextdoor posts; one had over 900 comments, including photos of Isla sightings, circled and marked-up maps, words of encouragement, game plans, etc.

Every day Isla would be spotted and the careful pursuit to rescue her began. There was one day after the second snowstorm when she was not spotted at all. Hearts sank fearing she had succumbed to the cold going without water and food for days.

The following day she was sighted again and all faith was restored. Several rescue attempts were made but the most notable was on February 17th, when a neighbor spotted her at the Lakewood Country Club. With the help of the Lakewood Community and neighborhood, we were able to confine her in a secure space where she could have been safely captured. However, DAS felt we were trespassing on the course and we missed our opportunity. Isla fled.

From Lakewood, Isla traveled to Lake Highlands, 635, then worked her way to Highland Park via Loop 12. We can provide a map with all of her known sightings, her ability to travel was impressive.

Unfortunately, on February 23rd, we received a call from DAS stating she had been hit by a car. While at the vet that night, the owner realized this was much more than he could handle, and he surrendered her over to me so that we (Jill, Maria, Adean, Krissy, and me) could figure out the best path for her moving forward.

Once the Dallas community learned of her accident, they (again) came out in full swing. Residents from Uptown, Greenville, Lakewood, Highland Park, University Park, etc. banded together to raise money for her medical needs and recovery. A Go Fund Me account has been set up in her name and multiple fundraisers are underway. She has her own Instagram account and Nextdoor board, so those who have literally “followed” her from the beginning can continue to watch her progress.

Isla’s injuries are extensive, but with lots of care, we are optimistic that we can get her back to being the spunky runner she was before her accident. A daily update of her health is listed below.

The Nextdoor app brought people together who had never spoken to each other in their life. It has become a good-feeling moment for our community in such a time of despair between this past year's current events (and last week!). If there is one good thing that came out of this tumultuous storm, it’s Isla.

Current State

Isla spent the first night at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) where they ran several tests to evaluate her condition. We found she had a ruptured bladder and the inability to move her hind legs. Priority number one was addressing the bladder issue to avoid infection. We received an update the next morning that her bladder was looking good and she was stable enough to be transported to MedVet where a neurologist saw her to assess the paralysis in her hind legs.
As you can imagine her bills will be extensive so we need help raising funds to set her up for success.

We will be posting daily updates to keep everybody updated.
