Authors of Color for Macomb School District 185

My home state erupted over the murder of George Floyd. Our nation is crying and we need to make change. One way that we can make that change is to reimagine education. 

I'm a teacher. I'm a reader. I want my students to know that reading is powerful. It is activism. 

I live in a rural town in downstate Illinois. We have around 150 teachers in our school district. As a community, we can make a change. We can fight to have more books in the classrooms--all classrooms--that are written by people of color about people of color and that tell the narrative that we often choose not to tell.

The goal of this Go Fund Me is to raise money to buy books by people of color about people of color--fiction, non-fiction, historical, political, memoirs, humor, fantasy, plays, biographies--for every classroom and every teacher in the district. Even if each teacher gets one new book for their classroom library, it's a start. But, I would love to be able to supply multiple books for every classroom and teacher to start the Fall with the narratives of the lives of people of color. 

Here's how you can help. Spread this page. Get as many people in Macomb to pledge $10 (or as much as you can afford) for books. If you're outside of Macomb and want to help, that's great too.

Do you have books you want to donate? Let me know. I will pick them up (or give you my address to mail them to me.)

Do you have suggestions for books? Book for all age levels preschool to 12th grade are needed. 

Are you a teacher in Macomb and want books for your classroom? Let me know. If you have certain requests, I can get those for you. 

Let's start to make a change in our community. The way I know how to do that is through books and reading. So, please, donate.  

I hope to work with independent book stores to purchase books and get them to schools before classes start in August.
