Autonomous car vs. bike, please help my brother

Hi, my name is Stephanie, and I'm asking for your help because my brother Travis was recently hit by an autonomous vehicle while on his bicycle in San Francisco.

 

Here is his story...

 

"On March 24th, 2022, I was riding my bike near the beach in San Francisco down a slight slope. My hands were on my brakes to make sure the bike was in control. About 150 feet ahead of me, a vehicle suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. To avoid oncoming traffic, I veered towards the vehicle's right, which suddenly moved directly in front of me.

 

At that point, I could not avoid impact and crashed through the vehicle's back window with my bike. As I lay on the road, I was not sure whether the car that hit me had a driver.

 

My resulting injuries were a broken wrist, a compound hematoma on my left forearm, and extreme muscle trauma on my left shoulder and neck. The lacerations on my face required stitches. For the days following my injury, I have been unable to sleep and do not feel safe driving (with one hand). The doctor has given me about 6-8 weeks to heal sufficiently.

 

I am the sole caregiver for my 12-year-old daughter, who needs a ride to school in Daly City Monday-Friday. We currently reside in San Francisco. My daughter is also in the midst of a mental health crisis resulting from past trauma.

 

I work as a finish carpenter and cannot do the physical labor required to get paid. My savings was recently wiped out due to very high moving expenses. My financial position has also been severely compromised as I am working through a slow and painful divorce process. I know, it's a lot to take on.
