AVM Surgery for Laura
Donation protected
On July 30th, 2020 I suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and stroke as a result of a ruptured aneurysm that developed on an AVM.
My name is Laura Reno, and I was working out at home when I experienced a strange headache and noticed some loss of vision. I told my sister who rushed me to a hospital, where they performed several scans of my brain and eventually found the source of the bleed in an arteriovenous malformation, or AVM. This tangle of blood vessels is a rare congenital defect that developed an aneurysm, so when my blood pressure increased because the work out the blood vessel ruptured and bled. I have been incredibly lucky to have survived the incident and remain largely physically unaffected, but I need to undergo surgery to remove the AVM to prevent any further hemorrhages. This is a costly procedure (over $100,000 before insurance) that is impossible for me as a college student to pay for, even with insurance.
I pay for tuition on my own, and work as an RA to cover my housing expenses at school. I have stayed at my college every summer since freshman year, but was sent home this year due to COVID-19. The time spent at home caused strain with my family to the point that I had to move out of my parents' home over the summer and stay with my older sister until I was allowed back on campus. With my housing subject to be taken away if the school has to close as a result of a spike in COVID cases and little financial support from my parents, this medical emergency exacerbates already existing problems. With these expenses I may not be able to pay for my next and final semester of college that I have worked so hard for. I have been able to take care of myself for the past few years, and I pride myself on my independence so I hate to ask for help but really don't know what else to do at this point.
All funds will go towards medical expenses so that I can recover peacefully and finish my last year of college. Thank you!
