Avoiding Blind Spots Navigating life with low vision

Donation protected

Hello, my name is Emily Lawson, and I am a visually impaired artist. I create multimedia art using fabric textile designs, alcohol ink, and acrylic paint to tell the stories of my life north of 60. My abstract designs are deeply influenced by my mother's incredible experiences.
Four years ago, I lost much of my vision. This unexpected change brought significant challenges, but it also fueled my determination to remain resilient and independent. Despite the obstacles, I have continued to pursue my passion for art and physical activities.
I am actively involved in various sports, including dragon boat racing with the Blind Ambition team, modified lacrosse, and walking with a blind navigation group. These activities have not only kept me physically active but have also brought me immense joy and a sense of community. Being able to purchase a tandem bike as well as receive reimbursement for other modified sports equipment would be incredibly helpful.
I am raising funds to cover the remaining costs of a guide dog through Aspen Service Dogs in Edmonton, AB, Canada. This guide dog is already partially paid for, but I need your help to complete my fundraising and bring this incredible companion home. Many free guide dog programs have extensive waiting lists, so I chose to invest in Aspen Service Dogs to regain my independence sooner.
Living with low vision can be difficult for others to understand. It’s hard for people to comprehend why I can excel at some activities but struggle with others. However, it is up to me to live my life with as much joy and participation as possible. This guide dog will be critical to my ability to navigate my surroundings safely and independently, especially considering the challenges of detecting cracks in sidewalks, depth perception issues, and curb cuts.
Over the past four years, I have had to travel and pay for my own accommodation in order to access services from CNIB in Edmonton and Calgary, as they do not have an office in Lethbridge. I have also partially or fully paid for many aids needed to gain basic independence. Reimbursement for some of these expenses would be incredibly helpful.
Your generous support will help me afford the travel and tools necessary for daily living, which are not funded by existing programs. This guide dog will be a vital independence maker, allowing me to continue living an active and fulfilling life. Falling is one of the most challenging aspects of living with low vision, and while my white cane helps me detect obstacles, a guide dog will help me avoid them altogether.
Thank you for considering my campaign. Your support means the world to me. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on my journey to independence.
