Help us to restore the Lancaster to fly again!
We have the opportunity to give wings to two historic Avro Lancasters but we need your help to raise £500,000.
This project is a major step forward in the journey to restore Avro Lancaster NX611 ‘Just Jane’ to airworthy condition. Learn about who we are with this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWdlSOxl3QE
The operators of Avro Lancaster NX611 at East Kirkby in Lincolnshire are combining forces with les Ailes Anciennes, owners of Avro Lancaster NX664 at le Bourget, with the plan to restore two wings to taxying condition for NX664 and two wings to airworthy condition for NX611.
This step is of huge benefit to the restoration of Avro Lancaster NX611 ‘Just Jane’. If you want to see NX611 fly again then this is the best way for it to happen! Read ‘What are the benefits?’ to find out why……
So, what’s the plan?
Phase 1- Transport the port wing of NX664 to East Kirkby, Lincolnshire, build a wing jig and restore the port wing of NX664 to taxying condition.
Phase 2- Remove the port wing of NX611. Fit the port wing of NX664 to NX611. Restore the port wing of NX611 to airworthy condition.
Phase 3- Transport the port wing of NX664 back to le Bourget and collect the starboard wing. Restore the starboard wing of NX664 to taxying condition.
Phase 4- Remove the starboard wing of NX611. Fit the starboard wing of NX664 to NX611. Restore the starboard wing of NX611 to airworthy condition.
Phase 5- Transport the starboard wing of NX664 back to le Bourget.
How long will it take?
The wings project is expected to take approximately 4 years
What are the benefits?
Avro Lancaster NX611 ‘Just Jane’ is 5 years into a 10 year restoration plan to take her to airworthy condition. ‘Just Jane’ is taxied for the public at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre during the summer months in order to raise the funds to restore her to flight. This means that any restoration work is restricted to a 6 month period over winter which isn’t long enough to restore a wing. Using the wings of NX664 means that we can restore the wings of NX611 over a full 12 month period meaning that NX611 will not have to stop taxying and she can continue to honour the memory of RAF Bomber Command without any long periods of closure. NX664’s wings will allow us to build a jig and gain the vital information and experience of the Lancaster wing before we start the airworthy restoration of NX611’s wings.
The added benefit of this project is that the Ailes Anciennes at le Bourget will receive two restored wings to allow them to complete their restoration of NX664! That gives two Lancasters their wings!
