As the world continues to cope with COVID-19 and the devastating health and economic effects, the current struggle of our Native American neighbors around the United States is being left out of our media reporting and our collective consciousness.
One such tribe is the Crow Nation in Montana. I recently learned that the local hospital serving the entirety of the Crow & Cheyenne tribes has only six ventilators to handle this pandemic. Let that sink in. In addition, recent financial issues within the tribe have caused budgetary cuts including monthly stipends for the tribe's Elders in care homes and across the nation. The most vulnerable members of the tribe are now without the money they need for their essentials.
We recently filmed a documentary on the 100th Crow Fair Celebration, an annual event bringing tribes and visitors to the Crow Nation from across the globe for a massive celebration of culture and series of traditional competitions. It is the largest gathering of tipis in the world.
I spoke with our subjects and producers Calvin, Michelle, Dylan & Julia and we agreed that if we could make an impact with this film, now is the time to do so.
Today we are releasing our documentary Still Here: A Crow Nation Story, in conjunction with this fundraiser to support the Elders of the Crow Nation.
All proceeds will go to the Awe Kualawaache Care Center, a Crow Nation Elder Care home as well as other Elder tribe members. We are asking people to donate if able.
