Axel's Medical Expenses
Donation protected
Hello, I am writing on behalf of the Robledo family.
On September 13th, 2022, my family and I were celebrating our grandmothers birthday down in Pilsen/Lower West Side of Chicago as we do every single year. A heartfelt family celebration was all that we had planned. We didn’t expect anything to go wrong since our entire family has grown up in the area and have never experienced any type of violence or have participated in gang affiliations. At around roughly 10 p.m., that all changed for us that night. Our family member, Axel, age 13, took a small trip to the store nearby (less than half a block away) with other relatives wanting to buy some dominoes to play with at the party. Being that the party was easily accessible through the alleyway, it was an easy and short path to get back to the family celebration. Before being able to get back into the birthday celebration, Axel, along with everyone else suddenly heard what we thought were fireworks. More than 40+ bullets were being aimed to the group of relatives that were coming back from the store. Two gunmen aimed to the group of relatives from the end of the alleyway. As of result, Axel was struck in the head twice. My family reacted fast and cautious knowing that this can result into something life-threatening. Axel was quickly rushed to the hospital where doctors soon let us know that he is suffering from brain damage. Knowing that this is something that my family and I have never experienced, we all tried to stay as positive as we can be and prayed the entire night for god to give us a chance. We were given the decision to have the surgeons perform a life threatening surgery on his brain in order to remove the two bullets right away. We knew that if we were to wait longer on the ok for the surgery to be performed, we would lose him. But we also knew that if we were to give the ok, it would still be a 50% chance that we would still lose him. Having god by our side as a family, we went through with the surgery. After four hours, with much anxiety and anticipation, the surgeons inform us that the surgery went well. Today, he is moving, hearing, and writing to us, letting us know that he is strong and a fighter. As a family, our hearts are still aching and scarred due to this horrific event. As we go through this recovery process with Axel, we would like to ask for any donations that will go to covering the medical costs of his surgery. Anything will help our family and we are all forever grateful for everyone that has been keeping us in their prayers. Thank you.
