Study: Ayahuasca for Immigrants and Refugees

Tax deductible
During the summer of 2022, Unlimited Sciences will conduct an observational research study with a group of primarily female immigrants and refugees who will participate in an Ayahuasca ceremony in the hopes that the experience will help them heal from prior trauma. The study will engage licensed therapists and psychologists who are experienced with psychedelic therapy. Specifically, the study aims to better understand the positive and/or negative outcomes of using Ayahuasca in a naturalistic setting (outside a research laboratory), and any potential factors that could affect those outcomes. By collecting data from participants who already plan to use Ayahuasca, Unlimited Sciences aims to investigate variables and characteristics of the experience that could influence long-term health effects.

We’re grateful to collaborate with Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris who is contributing as Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) for the study. Dr. Carhart-Harris is the Founding Director of The Neuroscape Psychedelics Division and newly endowed Ralph Metzner Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco, and is a world-renowned leader in psychedelic science. Previously, Dr. Carhart Harris led the Center for Psychedelic Research, Division of Brain Sciences, in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. Dr. Carhart-Harris has been a force in the recent re-emergence of psychedelic research, and we are humbled to have his support.

Donations raised via GoFundMe will help pay for expenses related to key research personnel, equipment, institutional review board, and other direct costs such as materials and supplies and publication expenses. Unlimited Sciences' role in the event is solely focused on observational research, and is not facilitating the ceremony or administering Ayahuasca to participants. The results of the study will eventually be published and shared with the general public in the interest of advancing scientific understanding of using Ayahuasca for therapeutic purposes.

Unlimited Sciences is a psychedelic research nonprofit that uses the power of data to serve the community, educate the public, and inform common-sense practices and policies regarding psychedelic use. At Unlimited Sciences, we are focused on driving psychedelic research forward, and our goal is to capture observational data in real-world settings and share these results with the public. It’s estimated that over 30 million people have used some form of psychedelics in the U.S. alone. Our goal is to access this knowledge, mitigate harm and reduce stigma through education.
