Guerchang Bastia's "Fè l an Kreyòl" Album

Donation protected

Guerchang Bastia is a militant artist committed to changing the situation of his country, Haiti. In this sense, his goal is to make music that raises consciousness.

In a country where the majority of the population is non-literate, and 65% of the population is under 35 years old, music is a fundamental medium to inform, explain, and share. "And in such an economic and social situation," Bastia reminds us, "resistance is the obligation of all conscious citizens."

Re-titled "Fè l an Kreyòl /Do it in Kreyòl," Bastia's first reggae album contains 13 tracks that cover several themes from unemployment to climate change without neglecting the central theme of human life that is love.

Supported by several institutions in Port-au-Prince, Bastia has already recorded all 13 songs with the collaboration of creative and eclectic producers and competent musicians like Stevenson Michel and Minouche Chouloute of Haiti and Didier Awadi of Sénégal.

"Music that is the truth is one that is absolutely collective. These are essential elements for the realization of my project," Bastia explains.

This GoFundMe campaign is designed to raise money to cover the cost  of post-production, album printing and promotion, and the release event.

The album release event will take place in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on International Day of Creole Cultures and Languages Monday October 28, 2019.

Bastia was born in Hinche, Haiti in 1988. He moved to Port-au-Prince to complete secondary school. During his studies at the Lycée Horatius Laventure in Delmas, he gained consciousness and participated in student demonstrations against the subpar public educational system. Bastia majored in Sociology at the State University of Haiti's Faculté des Sciences Humaines.

In 2009, as a university student, he stood in solidarity with workers seeking to increase the minimum wage. He was arrested and jailed for 9 days. There, he met other young people who had spent between 3 and 5 years in cages without ever seeing a judge. These painful and awareness-raising experiences inspire the writing of his musical texts.

"To resist is to create; to create is to resist. Long live the music that accompanies social justice and change!"
