¡Hola! ¿Te gustaría ayudarnos a hacer historia? Somos un equipo de 9 estudiantes de la UAB que representaremos a nuestra universidad en iGEM: la mayor competición de biología sintética del mundo.

Estamos trabajando en un proyecto revolucionario: desarrollar un probiótico para combatir la colonización de Staphylococcus aureus en el intestino. Esta bacteria es conocida por su capacidad de colonizar el cuerpo humano y causar varias infecciones, incluidas algunas graves como la sepsis. Su resistencia a los antibióticos presenta un desafío clínico importante, resaltando la necesidad de terapias alternativas.

Nuestro objetivo es claro: ofrecer una solución innovadora para proteger a los pacientes vulnerables y prevenir la resistencia a los antibióticos. ¿Cómo lo haremos? Utilizando técnicas de ingeniería genética y un sistema de expresión basado en el pH intestinal modificaremos la levadura Pichia pastoris para que produzca moléculas antimicrobianas capaces de atacar específicamente a S. aureus.

Hello! Would you like to help us make history? We are a team of 9 students from the UAB who will represent our university in iGEM, the world’s largest Synthetic Biology competition.

We are working on a revolutionary project: Developing a probiotic to combat the colonisation of Staphylococcus aureus in the intestine. This bacterium is known for its ability to colonise the human body and cause various infections, including some serious ones such as sepsis. Its resistance to antibiotics presents a significant clinical challenge, highlighting the need for alternative therapies.

Our goal is clear: To offer an innovative solution to protect vulnerable patient and prevent antibiotic resistance. How will we do it? By using genetic engineering techniques and an expression system based on intestinal pH, we will modify the yeast Pichia pastoris to produce antimicrobial molecules capable of specifically attacking S. aureus.
