Help Save Poppy's Leg After Deer Attack
Donation protected
My mom, Tasha O’Krane and her four month old dog, Poppy, were attacked by a deer on June 14th, leaving Poppy severely injured and in need of emergency surgery. Mom and Poppy were walking in our neighbourhood in a catwalk around 4:30pm. Poppy was on leash and practicing her heel, when suddenly, the deer was just a couple of feet from the pair, and coming at them very aggressively. A four foot tall fence was the only barrier between them and the deer. Because they were in a confined space in the catwalk, there was nowhere to move, and any small movements were causing the deer to lunge at them. My mom picked up Poppy, who was squirming and yelping, when she made the decision to let her have a running chance home, being only about 200 feet away. She tried distracting the deer, but once the dog began to run, it caught up in a matter of seconds and began to jump repeatedly on the helpless puppy, trying to kill her or "stomp her dead". Once my mom caught up to the deer and managed to finally scare it off, she grabbed the dog and ran to the car, rushing to the nearest emergency vet. We are so grateful Poppy is alive, but her road to recovery is going to be a challenge. She has been left with a broken hind leg, broken rib, bruised lungs and liver and some internal bleeding that has thankfully stopped now. The initial emergency treatment was costly but credit cards were available to cover it. She has since undergone major surgery to repair her leg but due to her age and the proximity of the break to the growth plate she will require a second surgery in 4weeks to remove the hardware. (Also in Vancouver) She will need frequent dressing changes over the next few weeks and more x-rays in a month’s time. At the end of Poppy's journey the expenses will be closer to $15,000 rather than the $10,000 that was initially expected (not including travel, time from work, and aftercare). Vet costs alone have already exceeded $10,000.
Any amount will help Poppy heal and lighten the unexpected burden for my parents.
Everyone's love and support this far means so much! ❤️
