Living with Guns, Hunger and COVID-19 June 2020 in the Congo and how it impacts NSW

In these tense times we must show that life matters and protect our nurtures. While cities and towns around the globe are shut down due to the COVID-19, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has recently reported two shocking deaths that will mark the history in 21st Century:

·       On April 18, 2020 death of two young Congolese women from Banyamulenge, a minority Tutsi group living in Minembwe South-Kivu in the Eastern D.R.Congo.

In these tense times we must show that life matters and protect our nurtures. The cruel brutality of the way in which the women were violated and killed sent shockwaves through local Banyamulenge community of Newcastle and Australia and around the world as well. Nyamwiza Francine and Nyiramutarutwa Naziraje, were tortured, sexually violated, killed and each part of the bodies amputated. These women had been on their way back to their village of Minembwe from fields where they had harvested cassava after being locked down in Concentration camp.

Nyamutarutwa a mother of six and Nyamwiza a mother of two children raped to death when she was pregnant. Both women were killed by Mai-Mai Congolese militias after being abandoned by a government army officer who accompanied the details about this atrocity can be found on  BBC (https://www.bbc.com/gahuza/amakuru-52855094.).

These two young women dared to leave the concentration camp in Minembwe. Our local effort can stem global change by saving lives of the most desperate community in Minembwe concentration camp.

I am raising money for Global Alliance for Peace (GAP), (www.allianceforpeace.org) a small registered charity with tax deductibility status if over 2 dollars. Raising $25, 000 AUD will fly a plane with 10 tonnes of semolina from Goma-Minembwe to feed these refugees locked in Minembwe Concentration Camp. Minembwe area has no accessible of road which limits media access and humanitarian organisations.

GAP was founded by local former refugee Jerome Rugaruza in Newcastle NSW. Jerome has become my good friend. This week he is mourning (along his refugee community here in Australia) due to the recent murder of two mothers in Jerome's homeland of Minembwe in the Congo. Jerome tried to raise awareness on what is going on in Minembwe but no step was taken to prevent such calamity to happen (https://www.cowraguardian.com.au/story/6464664/cowra-provides-new-life-for-congolese-refugees-fleeing-crisis/

Jerome personally visited Minembwe last March facilitated by Congo former vice President Azarias Ruberwa. I took food to Minembwe using same plane after attending a peace conference in Kinshasa the Capital of D.R.C which was hosted by His Excellency Felix Antoine Tchisekedi, the current President of D.R. Congo. After the meeting he guaranteed a safe protection of innocent civilians.

Global Alliance for Peace has already made a huge positive impact earlier this year when Jerome visited communities and facilitated food relief for the minority groups with the assistance of the former Vice president of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This has opened up a trusted channel of raised funding from Australia to Minembwe.

Already through fundraising and donations from individuals and grants Jerome has sponsored two Congolese teens who were orphaned refugees to come to Australia for a better life. He has been able to provide educational support by paying school fees for students in The Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda and provide funds to build shelters in Eastern Congo.

Jerome has worked tirelessly, but his people are calling in hunger once again. You see, he is one of the lucky ones who was able to migrate to Australia. However, the people in Minembwe remain socially and politically invisible in the place that they have called home since the 1800s. They are phoning him daily asking him to return. But he currently restricted from international travel due to the Covid 19 Pandemic.

Therefore he is requesting the Australian community to dip into their pockets to give a small amount that will  absolutely give a future for the helpless in Minembwe and create a more loving world.
