Bring Corky Home
Corky’s Story:
Corky is the longest-held captive orca in history. For over 55 years, she has been confined to a concrete tank and is held at SeaWorld San Diego, far from her home waters in British Columbia. Corky’s story is one of resilience and her pod, the A5s, continues to roam the waters of Johnstone Strait, while Corky remains isolated from her family. But there is hope for Corky to return home.
Double Bay Sanctuary is a facility designed to give captive orcas like Corky a natural, spacious environment. Here, Corky will live in her home waters, in natural seawater filled with rocks, kelp, tides, and marine life, providing the closest thing to the wild that she can experience after over five decades in captivity. We are seeking a collaboration with SeaWorld, allowing their staff to continue Corky’s feeding and medical care as she transitions to her new home.
At Double Bay, Corky will have:
- More space to swim, dive, and breach.
- Room to potentially live with a companion orca.
- The ability to interact with the sea life in the bay.
- The chance to reconnect with her A5 family pod, who still frequent the area.
After surviving over 55 years in captivity, Corky deserves the chance to come home and experience a life that honors her resilience and natural behaviors.
Why Corky Needs Our Help Now:
Corky has endured decades of life in captivity. She is still strong and healthy but has lost seven calves in captivity and has been denied the social structure and freedom that wild orcas rely on. At her advanced age, Corky deserves to live out the rest of her life in peace and dignity, in a space designed to care for her physical and emotional needs.
Double Bay Sanctuary would provide Corky:
- A large, netted enclosure in her natural habitat.
- 24-hour care and veterinary support from SeaWorld staff.
- The chance to hear and potentially interact with her family pod, the A5s.
- Freedom from forced performances and the stresses of captivity.
Where Your Donations Will Go - Your generous support will directly fund:
- The completion and maintenance of the Double Bay Sanctuary.
- Interpretive Centre for public education
- Habitat Restoration
- Veterinary care, food, and enrichment for Corky once she arrives.
- Environmental monitoring to ensure the health and sustainability of the sanctuary.
Every dollar brings us one step closer to giving Corky the freedom she deserves. By contributing to this campaign, you are helping to rewrite Corky’s story and supporting the future of captive orca rehabilitation.
