Help my uncle

Hi my name is Mathew and I'm trying to help my uncle out.

About a month ago my 78 year old disabled veteran uncle in law John went into the hospital for stomach issues and ended up needing emergency surgery (hiatal hernia) and was subsequently transfered to Sun City for that and physical rehabilitation.

Sometime in the month he was in there someone gained entry into his house and stole the $1500 our cousin left for him as well as the $500 my wife and I left.

She was leaving the next day to head back to Colorado and brought him to the hospital not knowing it was as serious as it was.

He was supposed to deposit it the day of or after he went to the hospital but ended up being there for a month.

We suspect it was my wife's mother as nothing else was taken except for the money, no sign of forced entry and only his drawers were gone through (she knew he kept small amounts of cash there) and she has a history of stealing from him and his sister (her mother) before she died. We thought she was out of state for good but after this happened we found out that she came back about a month before he went in.

We filed a police report but they said there's little they can do as there's no evidence as to who did it.

I know it's a long shot but I'm hoping he can get some help as he's on a very limited budget and this kind of loss is devastating to him.

If you can help him I know he would be forever appreciative.

He doesn't know I'm doing this and would never ask, so I'm hoping I can surprise him.
