Counselo and Morena from Guatemala to Berkeley

Donation protected
Hi friends! In case you are interested in doing more holiday giving, we wanted to introduce you to this opportunity. Thirty-four-year old Consuelo and her 8-year old daughter, Morena, just walked 22 days from Guatemala to the U.S. border at Tijuana. They literally climbed up and over Trump's wall (using a harness!) and made it into the U.S., where their coyote helped them make a call to their childhood friend Elizabeth, who lives in Berkeley. She bought them an airline ticket, and they landed in Berkeley only eight days ago. They are currently staying with Elizabeth's family in their small apartment in North Berkeley.

When asked why she chose to risk their lives in effort to get to the U.S., Consuelo explained that a gangster (a leader of a powerful Guatemalan gang) had caught her and imposed himself on her sexually and pressured her to join the gang. She left out of fear and desperation.

Next steps are to register Morena with the Berkeley Unified School District, enroll Consuelo in English classes at Berkeley Adult School, and find Consuela job.

Here are ways you can help:
  • Provide work opportunities that pay IN CASH
  • Donate money
  • Any recommendations for low cost room they can rent
  • Donate clothing/shoes
  • Help pay for English classes and Berkeley Adult School
  • Backpack and school supplies for Morena (4th grade)
  • Toys for Morena

Feel free to drop off any donations at:
