Dreams Abroad
Thank you all for taking the time to support me and my goals.
When I was in high school, I tore my ACL during a basketball game.
Unfortunately, in the years following, more injuries occurred, and I have consequently had four knee surgeries.
My long-time dream of playing college and potentially professional basketball was seemingly crushed as I was physically unable to play during my college years, due to the required, lengthy healing process. I continued to stay involved in basketball through refereeing, training, and coaching children. I continued my education and earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s degree in physical education. I have now worked as a physical education teacher in Queens for almost two years. Conveniently, teachers are subject to professional development incentives that are associated with furthering education.
It became immediately apparent that playing college basketball was a possibility. Recovered and healthy, I enrolled in college full-time once again at Nassau Community College. I also continued to work as a full-time teacher, coach two club high school basketball teams, and of course, join the college basketball team; not to mention taking care of my marriage and other responsibilities. Our season had its ups and downs, but we came out stronger for it. We fought our way up the ladder and earned respect from everyone we played. We ranked as high as number four in the country while averaging over 23 steals per game (#1) and had arguably the best defense in the country. We had put ourselves in contention to win the region, and potentially the national title. I came in to my own as the season progressed and lead us in scoring. Ranking ninth in the country in three pointers and 30th in the country in total scoring. Unfortunately, there was one obstacle we could not conquer. My basketball season recently came to a roaring halt as we lost the championship game. We were so close to a regional title I feel as though we still have unfinished business and I am eager for one more year, that is, my second and last year to play. The basketball season certainly has its stresses; however, I am happy to have played. God presented me with an opportunity and I am forever grateful.
Unfortunately, it is too much of a financial strain to pay for another year of college. Therefore, I am turning to my friends, family, and the kindness of others to help me pursue my dreams. My coach has informed me of a wonderful student-athlete abroad summer program, which I would love to attend. The program—which costs $3000—lasts four weeks and is located in Costa Rica. It involves daily basketball and physical training, doing an internship with the Special Olympics, and gaining valuable experience in my chosen field. I am looking for help to fund both this summer program and my tuition next year which will cost a total of about $10,000. Please help if you can. Anything and everything is appreciated. #imnotdoneyet #followyourdreams #nevergiveup #unfinishedbusiness #ballislife #blessed
Thanks again everyone,
