THE STORY:
Oct. 3, 2015: Two dogs were rescued from Highway 36 in Somerville, TX . One was in serious condition- hit by a car- the other was uninjured. Both were taken to the emergency hospital where the small one is still hospitalized and the black one is boarded near her. We need to find the owner(s). Home-medical Foster care will be for an additional 8 weeks. A volunteer foster home is needed.
THE PATIENT:
This Chihuahua was hit by a car and left lying in the fast lane of Hwy36 on a busy Saturday. (Picture taken a few minutes after we arrived at the hospital. )
She has an impact head injury, brain trauma, crushed foot (?), a fractured palate/jaw and right side impact body trauma. Possibly she may need a plate installed at the mouth fracture. She will require 8 weeks of hand-fed, liquid food and follow up visits & medications. She is receiving IV meds to prevent strokes. Her brain swelling has gone down and she no longer walks in circles. She is unable to chew, but can drink. She is in a lot of pain and is receiving meds for that. We hope she is released on Oct 8th where she will continue home care (in a foster home) until her owner is found. We immediately need 1 foster home for both.
THE REAL HERO:
This is the chihuahua's young companion. He was standing over her body to protect her; facing-off the oncoming traffic! He would lick her, to comfort and encourage her. If you could have seen his resolve and bravery as he stood over her in that scary 60mph traffic. It's a picture we won't forget.
He is a juvenile pup/dog and very concerned for her. We made sure they stayed together at the vet clinic. I believe his presence helped her fight to survive.
THE 2nd HERO:
Of all the cars speeding by, only one-- other than us-- stopped. I am very grateful for that man who helped. He blocked the other lane with his truck and helped us carry the dogs to our vehicle. He searched on his phone for a nearby vet. I wish I knew his name. We thank you! You are the only person who cared to help these dogs. I am angered that NO ONE even bothered to stop and help these dogs, before we had arrived.
HOW WE GOT INVOLVED:
We happened to be driving north on Hwy36 and saw the black dog in the southbound lane. Slowing down, we immediately realized that the lump in the road beneath him was another dog. With a fast u-turn, we blocked that lane with our truck and jumped out to find the chihuahua alive, watching us but unable to move.
The black dog was happy to see us. I don't believe it's "coincidence" we had loaded a dog crate in the bed of our truck that very morning. It held the black dog safely. Running to get a floor mat from our truck, my teen son helped gently slide the little dog's body onto our mat. We covered her in a towel and then rushed them both to the emergency vet hospital.
I can't even fathom why the other cars didn't even slow down!! They were driving by so close and so fast, even while we were trying to rescue !
The black dog had not been hit and I feel sure, he would have been--- if we did not stop to help the dogs.
The chihuahua is still under doctor's care while the companion is being boarded in-hospital as well, to prevent seperation anxiety.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
What would you be feeling -- if it were your dogs?
1) Get the word out in Somerville, TX to find the owner
2) Donate to pay the vet expenses (for follow-up too)
3) Pray for the dogs
4) Pray we reunite them with their owner(s)
5) Offer to be the foster care provider for both dogs.
6) Share this campaign with others you know.
See the leash on the dog? Again, I don't think it's "coincidence" that we'd bought this leash, just 20 minutes before seeing them in the road. Yep, this is Divine intervention. I'm sure of it. Father-God was looking out for these two.

A LESSON FOR ALL:
The dogs did not have tags. One is microchipped but the registration was never completed on file with the owner's contact info. The chip was provided by a mobile service... no vet records. Make sure your animal's microchip company has your updated emergency contact info on file.
