Melanie Chitty's Warrior Campaign

Melanie Chitty, my beautiful sister-in-law, was just diagnosed with a rare tumour in her C1 vertebrae that has actually shattered bone and left her in crippling pain. After discovering the tumour on February 10th, through a CT scan, Mel was transferred nine hours away from home to Vancouver General Hospital and endured countless tests to determine that the tumour is an extremely rare bone cancer. We are so thankful that the cancer is isolated to that location. The amazing medical team has begun an incredibly daunting treatment plan - 28 days of radiation in conjunction with 2 rounds of chemotherapy over the next five weeks. After the treatment, and when the tumour is smaller, the plan is to surgically remove the tumour and fuse her vertebrae to support her head and neck.

As a family member, I am watching Mel courageously and positively forge ahead with hope through the most difficult of diagnoses and overwhelming treatments. Mel, who is self-employed, will be unable to return to the workplace for an undetermined amount of time and Will has taken a leave of absence to be at her side during this extensive medical process. Both Mel and my brother will be holding tightly to each other as they navigate the challenging days ahead.

As Will’s sister, I feel helpless as I struggle to find ways to support them when I’m across the country. Though I can’t be there in person, the one thing that I and others can do is to help with their financial stress. A Go Fund Me account helps with the cost of additional medications, braces and treatments that have already begun. In addition, these funds will assist with the costs of living so far from home - accommodations, travel, parking, meals, fuel, etc.

I also know that times are difficult for a lot of people but if you are able to help, I would encourage you to support Mel, an amazing young woman in her fight against this horrible disease. I know both Mel and Will are so appreciative of anything you are able to give.
