My name is Joe Watkins. If you are a PHP developer, you may not know my name, but you probably use my code. Up until a month ago, I was active in the PHP Core.
* I wrote and maintain pthreads
* I am lead on the phpdbg project
* I maintain apcu
* I contribute to PHP’s source code
* I have a github account full of goodies
Then something happened. I was made homeless by a landlord taking back their house. With no time and no money, I have had to move into a Caravan - Travel trailer for my US friends - on some friend’s land, with my two kids and partner.
The four of us are squeezed into a living space of 20 feet. My workspace - where I once helped build PHP - is now relegated to my bed. My kids are sharing a bed 10 feet away. This is crippling my abilities to do anything but my job. I’ve had to stop contributions to other projects, not because I want to, but because I have to. I'm barely able to do my job and can't do anything about it.
The only way to get a tenancy is to have 6 months rent and a deposit in advance, and we just do not have it.
We - myself, my partner, and my kids - need a leg up to get back into a habitable space with a decent working environment. If I can raise the deposit money, I can maintain the tenancy myself as I have a reliable job now.
I am humbly asking for help from the community I love. The PHP community is very generous and it is my privilege to work on the language. So I am asking you to help me out. I need to raise £6.500,00. Please give what you can. If you can’t give right now, please help me spread the word.
