Mural Boricua en Minnesota
Donation protected
On Sept 12, 2020 Puerto Ricans in Minnesota Committee (PRIM) celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos "Don Pedro" with a virtual conference honoring his contribution to Afro-Puerto Rican history, politics, law and education.
Along with a keynote address from Oscar Lopez-Rivera, Dr. Miguel Fiol, Tamara Ramirez-Torres, Elsa Vega Perez, and music by Maria Isa and Plenasota; members of PRIM in collaboration with El Colegio High School felt it would be only right to commemorate the history of Puerto Rico's Don Pedro with a mural connecting our social justice movements from Minneapolis to Puerto Rico.

The invitation for the mural to be curated and led was decided by PRIM members to reach out to Minnesota Boricua Olivia Levins Holden and Maria Robinson who have started this amazing 50 feet mural in South Minneapolis' 42nd and Bloomington Avenue on the side of El Colegio High School. The mural centers Afro-Boricua roots, Boricua women in history, and Don Pedro Albizu Campos as a central figure and surrounded by others like Juana Colon, Lolita Lebron, Lola Rodriguez de Tío, Ramon Betances, Sylvia Rivera, Pura Belpre, Luisa Capetillo, and Yuísa "La Cacica de Loíza" the Taina Chief.

Both Olivia Levins Holden and Maria Robinson wanted to celebrate honoring Don Pedro as a way to circle folks who have contributed to Puerto Rican culture, vision, liberation, through organize resistance, information and story stewardship, organizing, and other means to Taino and African symbols, Bomba drummers and dancers along with other moments in recent historical movements for Puerto Rico and equality. This mural is to be a symbol of representation for those who are here in Minnesota connecting Puerto Rican history to current movements across the distance.

We are fundraising for expenses and cost that are in the hands of volunteering artists and grassroots organizing.
Special thanks to El Fondo Boricua Cultural Arts grant supporting Boricua Cultural Arts, Members of PRIM, El Colegio and volunteers who have been making food, coffee, and beverage runs for all those donating their time, efforts and Corazon to this mural.
