Baby Beckham and Family
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kristy Yates and I am creating this GoFundMe for some family members, Curstain and Phillip Waters and their sweet baby boy, Beckham. At their 20 week anatomy scan, their world was changed when they found out that Beckham has a congenital heart defect that is fatal without open heart surgeries. The condition was thought to be so severe that the doctors were trying to convince her to terminate the pregnancy, but instead they chose to put their faith in God.
This defect is known as Hypoplastic left heart syndrome. A condition in which the blood flow in the heart is compromised due to the left chamber not developing correctly. The left side of the heart basically can't function at all without major surgeries, and even then it doesn't always work out. He would need a procedure at within the first 48-72 hours, a major open heart surgery one month later, and then another heart surgery around 6 months of age. During her pregnancy, there were many trips to MUSC in Charleston, they kept their faith, and when Beckham was born in March he weighed 8 pounds and 3 ounces. Because of his weight, they were able to skip the first procedure and he had his first open heart surgery at one week old. The Norwood procedure was performed, it went well, and he was in ICU for almost a week with his chest still open just in case they needed to go back in quickly. He came through that and out of ICU into step down, where his parents and little sister Gracie (age 2) are now able to visit and learn to take care of him.
Things are definitely looking up and they hope to go home soon while they wait for the next surgery at around 6 months of age. We are so thankful they didn't listen to anyone that thought termination was a good idea and chose to trust GOD and his plan for Sweet Baby Beckham. This has obviously put a hardship on this young family financially. Curstain will be the full time caretaker, not able to work even part time hours. Phillip will be able to return to his job at Michellin when they come home, but for now the bills are coming in and piling up. During this emotional time, any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Funds would go towards their travel and time in Charleston and help with anything they need for the baby once they are back home. No donation is too small and is greatly appreciated.
